Music & creativity

It's amazing to me how good music can take you on a journey and provide a mental roller coster of images and emotion. I find that finding the songs that transport me the most all gathered into a single playlist is one of the most important creative tools in my arsenal. I find that everything from jazz, classical, and jam style rock (i.e. Led Zeppelin, the grateful dead, and the like) sometimes the most effective and valuable use of my time is to quit Final Cut, open iTunes and let my mind wander. I find that it is these times, when I am not thinking about the footage, that I come up with my most creative ideas. Never under estimate the power of music.

Bad videography...

I was having a conversation with a colleague of mine about the sudden flooding of bad videographers offering wedding and event packages for ridiculously low rates. In todays current economy when people are looking to save money, it can be tempting to hire some of these companies to lower the cost of their weddings.  THIS IS A HUGE MISTAKE! Wedding videography and photography is not where a bride and groom should look to cut costs.  Hiring a low cost videographer can mean the difference between a wedding video that you want to watch over and over again, and a video that looks like uncle Jim took his hand held video camera and hit record and let the camera capture what it does and only use the on camera mic to record sound from the PA speakers, only then to take the video and fill it with horrible cheesy generic graphics and transitions. Hiring a quality videographer is key in making sure a wedding or event is captured and edited properly.  People forget that a wedding video is how they are going to remember everything about one of the most important day in their lives.  Wedding videos are an investment not a whimsical add on.

Art, Nostalgia, Beauty, & Film

With today's high tech HD over saturated, super sharp video, people often forget the beauty and softness that comes with shooting something on celluloid film. The beautiful graininess and color tones, along with subtle features and shallow depth of field makes shooting in film a perfect medium to shoot a wedding in.  Watching a memorable event unfold from an 8mm reel brings back a certain nostalgia for days long gone.  Many companies have created aged film effects and some turn out really good, provided that the footage was shot properly but nothing is quite the same as 8 or 16mm film.

However there is a dark side to film, its not easy to work with.  If the camera man is not skilled it can be really easy to ruin a roll of film. However if a camera man is knowledgeable with shooting in film it can provide the most beautiful images possible.

At Coda Studios we have the option to shoot your event in film. As with any event we have only the most knowledgeable camera operators with vast amounts of experience shooting with film run the film cameras. Capture your special event on film and experience the beauty for yourself.  Please contact us for more information about our film services along with any of our other services.

Learning from life

I have learned a lot of things in the last 2 years.  Running my own company has been fun but at the same time the most work I have ever encountered.  Staying on top of the technological advances that bombard the video industry has been a chore in and of itself, however I believe that I have done a great job in doing so. I have had the opportunity to work with many skilled people in my career and have taken away something from each experience.  Though college is done and I am in the "real world" now I find that I will never stop learning and will never stop teaching.

Inspiration

Its funny where inspiration can come from. I find when I get stuck and thinks aren't clicking a run or bike ride can help. Sometimes it takes going to a park or go somewhere and people watch. Other time watching TV or a movie helps. I find when I do things that don't directly relate to the project at hand an idea will come to me and I often come up with something better and more impressive than I originally thought possible.
